A 20-year-old Georgetown man faces charges after police say he falsely reported that he was underage and had a sexual relationship with an Indian River educator.
Charges against Nicole DeGirolano, 23, were dropped Sept. 29 after police confirmed that Nathanael Perez-Gonzalez was 20 when he lived with and had a relationship with DeGirolano, who worked as a paraprofessional for the Indian River School District.
Perez-Gonzalez had told police he was 17 and in a relationship with DeGirolano, resulting in her arrest Sept. 20 on four counts of sexual abuse of a child. She was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $80,000 secured bond.
At the time of her arrest, DeGirolano told police that Perez-Gonzalez was 20; her attorneys provided a birth certificate that showed he was 20. Police obtained a birth certificate from Perez-Gonzalez that showed he was 17, and then checked with the Guatemala Consular to determine which birth certificate was authentic. The consular determined Perez-Gonzalez was 20; as a result, charges against DeGirolano were dropped.
Perez-Gonzalez turned himself in to Georgetown Police Oct. 24 and was charged with falsely reporting an incident to law enforcement, second-degree forgery and providing a false statement to law enforcement. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $5,000 cash bond.
